A Ride in the Woods
We rode the 4-wheeler up into the woods last night. Naturally, the puppy pack followed along. And it’s quite the trudge up the mountain especially if you’re of the 4-legged species. Here’s the thanks we got for inviting the dogs …

Can you say MUD? Ack!
Unfortunately, that was the only watering hole with enough water in it for the dogs to drink out of. Why Honey insisted on getting a mud bath I’ll never know. All I knew was she WAS. NOT. coming in my house for the night!
We discovered that the dogs aren’t the only ones appreciative of this watering hole …

Those are deer tracks! Mandy, the farm beagle, was incredibly interested in the smells, but she behaved and followed us. Shocking, I know. Beagles can be soooo stubborn.
While the dogs appreciated the exercise and water, I enjoyed the scenery. Not much to look at except for trees …

But to me, that’s a beautiful site. I grew up in a heavily wooded area and sometimes I simply miss being surrounded by trees. We have woods that border our yard, but there’s nothing like being in the middle of nowhere in the woods.
Peace. Fresh air. Nature sounds. Freedom. Quietness. Praise God!

Did you ever go to summer camp as a kid? I did! And today, I’m guest blogging over at Jendi’s Journal about one of my summer camp memories. Make sure you stop by and say hi!
Doggy Swim Time

Warmer weather means time for the dogs to dip in the creeks to cool off. Mandy, the farm beagle, is the only one who swims in our pond. She’s already earned her swim badge for this year.
On the other hand, Spot, the giant horse puppy and onlooker in the photo, is afraid to go any deeper than 3 or 4 inches in the water. At one point he went far enough in so that the water was touching his chest. He did NOT like that!!!
Sadie, our mini collie, is a creek dog. She loves to lay in the shallow part of the creek and let the water rush around her. Of course, she’s a muddy mess when she gets out, but at least she’s cool. LOL
Honey, our Chow mix, really isn’t much of a water dog. She prefers lounging in the shade. I guess her reasoning is that with all her fur, it would take too long to dry off if she hangs out in the water.

Since I did so well last time and used proper grammar and all, Mom is letting me write on her blog again.
I had a BIG adventure on Saturday. I got to go for another car ride! And I got stuck with two sticks.
And guess what? Honey, Sylvester, and Buttons came along. (Yep, mom forgot her camera…again.)
I was sitting on the porch when dad called me. I jumped right up and ran to the car like a good dog.
Then dad called Honey. She did NOT want to get in the car. She told me that she’s never been in the blue car. She’s more than 4 years old! I’ve been in the car a lot and I’m only 1 year old. But Honey said she rode in the big red truck before. I’ve never got to ride in the truck. Hmph!
I rode in the back seat with Honey for awhile. Our dirt road is awfully dusty when you hang your head out the window. Just thought you’d want to know.
When we got to the big road, I climbed up front to sit on mom’s lap. That’s my spot as dad’s navigator. Dad said we were going to the vet, but not THE vet (ya know that one I’ve been to lots). I had to sit up front to make sure dad missed the other cars. I only counted 3.
One time when I looked in the back seat, Honey was looking a little green. Her tummy doesn’t like car rides…if you know what I mean.
Buttons (she’s little cat, big mouth) wasn’t quiet at all. I tried sniffing her cage so she’d be quiet but she only hollered louder when I did that. Sylvester just sat in his cage looking handsome in his tuxedo. Wish Buttons knew how to be quiet.
When we stopped, there were a lot of big trucks and trailers. And something dad said were horses!!! Lots and lots of horses.
Honey and I took mom and dad for a walk on the leashes. We saw black horses, white horses, brown horses, tan horses, spotted horses. They were BIG! Some even had people on their backs.
There was little horse too. Mom said it was a miniature. I think it was about the size of Spot except with a lot longer hair on its neck. And Spot isn’t miniature.
Everyone loved Honey and said how furry and pretty she was. It was kind of nauseating to me.
After our walk, we got to sit near the concession stand. I tried taking a puppy nap, but people kept walking by with hot dogs, chili, and nachos. My beagle nose loooooves food.
We met a mean dog too. Mom and Honey were at the concession stand to get water when a mean dog started growling at them. I let him know that he was scrawny and best not mess with my mom and sis. I might be a fat beagle with a hurt knee, but my fat can still move. Honey said she had it under control, but I still growled and bristled at him from a distance. He left real quick after that.
We took some more walks after that. And I sniffed some more food walking by. Finally, mom bought me a hot dog! Well, I think it was really for her since she ate most, but I know she got it ’cause I reeeaaaally wanted some hot dog. I’m not sure why it’s called a “hot dog” ’cause it don’t look nothin’ like a dog. I’m just sayin’.
After two hours of basking in the sun, walking around sniffing all sorts of good stuff, and watching the horses (they’re huge!), mom said it was our turn. We got to walk behind some horse trailers and stood very close to a horse. Mom brought Sylvester and Buttons in their cages. They don’t wear collars so they can’t walk on leashes.
A lot of people were there. One man was the doctor. He was tall and skinny. Mom asked him to check my knee ’cause the other doctor man said I needed surgery. This doctor man said he didn’t think I did. He said I needed something called an x-ray. I wonder if it tastes good?
When I wasn’t paying attention, the doctor man stabbed me with a stick thing. It kind of pinched, but now I have my shots for two years.
Once again, the doctor man talked about how pretty and furry Honey was. Yeah, I almost lost my hot dog. Why can’t they say how pretty I am?
Then dad got Sylvester out of his cage. The big horse that was standing behind dad’s shoulder didn’t bother Sylvester at all. It didn’t bother dad either – he doesn’t like horses. Buttons got a furry comment too and two sticks. I really wanted to ask the doctor man if he had something to make her be quiet, but Honey wouldn’t let me.
After we all got stuck with two sticks, we got back in the car. Honey wasn’t too happy about that, but it was a short ride and we were back on the farm again. Sadie was jealous ’cause she ain’t been on a car ride in awhile.
Mom said we saved a lot of money going to the shot clinic and we helped the horse people.
I don’t know about money. I just know money buys food. The best part of the day (besides the walks, horses, fun smells, hot dog, and putting that mean dog in his place) is I might not need surgery. Does surgery sound like a bad word to you? I think it does. X-ray sounds better. Maybe I’ll get another car ride!

I is for injured

Mandy is on our injured dog list with a dislocated knee cap. She’s been limping a lot the past week, so yesterday we took her to the vet. (Read her story.) We’re hoping that with medicine and anti-inflammatories, she’ll avoid needing surgery.
But for now, she’s banned from chasing squirrels and rabbits, running a lot, and doing stairs. Everything a beagle loves to do. So, not a bad set of rules … if you’re anything but a beagle. The next 10 days should be interesting!
