Review: Boneman’s Daughters by Ted Dekker

Would you kill an innocent man to save your daughter?

They call him BoneMan, a serial killer who’s abducted six young women. He’s the perfect father looking for the perfect daughter, and when his victims fail to meet his lofty expectations, he kills them by breaking their bones and leaving them to die.

Intelligence officer Ryan Evans, on the other hand, has lost all hope of ever being the perfect father. His daughter and wife have written him out of their lives.

Everything changes when BoneMan takes Ryan’s estranged daughter, Bethany, as his seventh victim. Ryan goes after BoneMan on his own.

But the FBI sees it differently. New evidence points to the suspicion that Ryan is BoneMan. Now the hunter is the hunted, and in the end, only one father will stand.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is the first Ted Dekker book that I’ve read, and I was not disappointed. At. All.

The 401-page book held my attention with Dekker revealing details slowly and with great craft. Dekker builds the emotions of the story through the main character, Ryan Evans. Would it be possible for a man, who has been through so much trauma as a Naval Intelligence Officer, to commit the ultimate crime – murder another to save his child? What goes through the mind of a person in that situation? The mental anguish and emotional strain written in the pages of this book are real.

While the cover copy (the blurb above) suggests that Ryan Evans is not the BoneMan, I spent a good portion of the book wondering, just like the FBI agents, if he was. Side note: The cover copy says six young women have been abducted previously, but the story says seven which made people think the BoneMan was done (seven is the perfect number). Not sure why there’s a difference between the cover and story. :)

After reading this book, it’s obvious to me why Dekker has earned the title of New York Times bestselling author. He’s a master at suspense. He gives the readers just enough to make them look over their shoulder but still keep reading.Yes, I looked over my shoulder a few times.

If you don’t mind reading some descriptions that might make you squeamish, I highly recommend Boneman’s Daughters.
