Sweetwater Gap … delicious, unique, intriguing … and making me crave apples with every page turn.
Josie, the heroine, seems to have it all together – good job, place to live – until she returns to the family apple orchard at the request of her brother-in-law. Years before she “ran away” fleeing horrible memories, and now those same memories come flooding back along with overwhelming guilt.
Within minutes of arriving at the orchard, Josie meets Grady, the orchard manager, who is still smarting from his divorce. Grady feels threatened that Josie will force the family to sell the orchard and he’ll be without a job. As you can guess, sparks fly between Josie and Grady.
Too often characters fail to be well-rounded, and they fail to struggle with every day personal problems. Perhaps the best aspect of the book is Josie’s struggle with a chronic illness. So many people deal with day-to-day living and sickness, but authors don’t touch on these subjects except in books that are almost morbid and depressing. Author Denise Hunter breaks the mold and details Josie’s struggle with acceptance of her illness, but she does it in a tactful, almost lighthearted, way.
Sweetwater Gap is a gem of a book with an intriguing storyline, unique setting, and beautiful characters. Pick up a copy to read – you won’t be disappointed.
