Keeping Food Fresh

Today is Frugal Friday over at Crystal’s where she talks about not wasting what we’re given. Since we live on a farm, it’s easy to get an abundance of veggies, fruits, and meats – all at once.

In order to preserve our harvest, I like canning or freezing things. I also do this for things we buy in bulk.

Originally I used regular freezer bags, but after a couple of months, a lot of things developed freezer burn. When you have enough corn or green beans to last through the winter, freezer burn after two months can be frustrating.

For meat, I tried wax paper with an outer layer of foil. That worked okay. However, I was really bothered that things didn’t stay as fresh as they could.

Then someone gave me a Handi-Vac Vacuum Sealer. I love it! It’s simple and easy to use. The bags cost about the same as regular, good quality freezer bags, but the food stays fresher a lot longer and, best of all, no freezer burn!!! :)

You can read my review of the Handi-Vac here.
