A Most Memorable Character

My Friend Amy hosts the Saturday Christian Fiction Carnival and today’s question is:

There are many outstanding characters in the books we read but often there’s that one special character we remember for a long time. Sometimes it’s because we relate to them, or maybe we were going through something similar to what they experienced. Or maybe they are just the sort of person we wish we were. Who is the most memorable character in Christian fiction for you and why?

I know my most memorable characters aren’t in Christian fiction, but I really have to say Anne from Anne of Green Gables and Emily from Emily of New Moon, also by L.M. Montgomery.

Both girls are unique, yet similar. Their dreams, friendships, and experiences in life seem so real especially to a young reader. I grew up in a solid family, but both of these girls grew up without one or both parents. The emotions that Montgomery portrays for each girl helped solidify them in my mind for years to come.

As far as a memorable Christian fiction character, I really can’t think of a name. The characters that resonated the most with me growing up were from the Thoene’s Zion series. It’s been a long time (like 15 years) since I’ve read the books so I no longer remember the names.

At the time, I was in high school, interested in music (possibly even professionally), and wanting to do something important with my life. While reading the series, my mom and I took a short trip to Europe and saw many of the places and buildings mentioned in the stories. Talk about a book coming to life! I fully expected to see one of the characters walking towards me in Vienna!

So, this hasn’t been my best answer for the Christian Fiction Carnival, but I think that during each season of our lives different characters mean different things to us. I chose to look back at my teenage years because obviously if I can remember the characters, they made an impact on me and qualify as memorable. And those years were my first exposure to Christian fiction.
