Do a Price Check

I’ve talked in a couple of recent posts about how we’ve been able to save money on a daily basis. This week I found a “treasure”! :)

About 6 months ago I started taking higher potency vitamins because of my hypothyroidism. (When you are hypothyroid, especially for an extended period, the body doesn’t digest or absorb vitamins like it should. To counteract the lack of absorption, the strength of the vitamin needs to be higher. Previously, I tried taking regular vitamins, like Centrum, and saw absolutely no benefit whatsoever.) For the past 6 months, I paid $8.94 each month for the higher potency vitamins. I hated paying that much, but the benefits were too great to stop taking the vitamin.

On a whim, I decided to check online for the same vitamins. Bingo! A quick search yielded 6 months worth for $25.45 via Amazon!!! Normally, for 6 months, my price was $53.64. I was able to save over 50% by buying online. Plus, I signed up for a trial of Amazon Prime and received free 2 business day shipping. I placed my order late Friday evening and received my order by noon on Tuesday – considering the weekend and a holiday on Monday, I was impressed. :)

Remember, just because you’ve bought the same product from the same place for 3, 6, or 12 months doesn’t mean that it is still the best price. Take some time this week and check around for prices on items you use on a regular basis. After finding the vitamins cheaper through Amazon, I also checked the price of my contact solution. Unfortunately, it is still cheaper in the store.

In other areas of savings this week, according to our CVS receipts, we saved $49.45 with coupons, sales and ECBs. Our out-of-pocket expense was about $9 and the average price per item was 60 cents. Not the greatest run for out-of-pocket, but still profitable! We also stopped at Kroger’s for a few groceries (savings of $18.22) and Target (savings of approx. $8).
